Legendary Berkeley Prep volleyball coach Randy Dagostino has something to add to his already incredible resume. He's now a Hall of Famer.

Dagostino is one of eight selected for induction into the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame this year, the FHSAA announced Monday.

Dagostino is 711-151 with 12 state championships. The longtime Berkeley Prep coach moved into the top spot among active in-state volleyball coaches for wins when Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons coach Louise Crocco retired last month. The Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and awards banquet is April 6 in Gainesville.

Local standouts commit

Ryan Asare-Bediako, a key member of Wharton's champion 5A boys soccer team, has committed to the Stetson Hatters.

"I like the school a lot," Asare-Bediako said. "It's well-respected around here."

Asare-Bediako said he talked to Stetson coach T. Logan Fleck at the state championships in Fort Lauderdale and was told to "get my transcript in quickly so they can get me an admission decision."

"I told them that's where I want to go," Asare-Bediako said.

The odds of Asare-Bediako being admitted appear good: He carries a 4.57 weighted grade point average. A forward with blazing speed, Asare-Bediako scored 13 goals this season. In a playoff win over River Ridge, he scored three goals.

Elsewhere, Plant tennis star Joel Samaha, one of the state's top players, committed to Yale.

"He's a brilliant kid," Plant coach Michael McWilliams said. "He told me he wants to contend this year. He wants to get a (state) championship and take home a ring."

Wildcats to party this afternoon

Wharton will celebrate its Class 5A boys soccer title with a school pep rally today at 1:45 p.m.

According to Wildcats coach Scott Ware, the school has invited both past principals, Mitch Muley and George Gaffney, along with Paul Wharton, for whom the school is named.

Because Ware, right, lost a bet to the team, the players will chop off his locks in front of the crowd.
