WhatÕs new
Sonnanstine has been at his best in the past month, especially against the Red Sox, giving up zero earned runs in a combined 13 innings in two September starts. In his last start, he won the ALDS clincher against the White Sox, giving up two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Wakefield hasnÕt pitched in more than two weeks, since Sept. 28. The veteran had won two of his past four starts but got chased by the Rays (six runs in 2 1/3) on Sept. 13.
Scouting report
A crafty right-hander who uses several arm angles and a deceptive delivery. Sonnanstine isnÕt overpowering (87-89 mph fastball), but mixes his pitches well (slider, change-up) and has great control. Wakefield is a classic knuckleballer, with the pitch varying a lot in speed (55-69 mph). He also throws a fastball (74-78 mph) and a slow curve and has success partly due to deception, as he throws all his pitches from the same type of delivery.

What theyÕre saying
"ThatÕs one of the things that I think I do well, is just keeping even-keeled and just go about my business and stay to my game plan and work toward my strengths." Ñ Sonnanstine, on pitching a big game at Fenway Park "Some days, thereÕs balls that are going to the backstop. ... There are going to be stolen bases, thereÕs going to be wild pitches. ThereÕs going to be fastballs, but the good part is that you look up in the seventh and he usually gives you a chance to win." ÑRed Sox manager Terry Francona on Wakefield
