MILITARY NEWS

The following military personnel graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman Bradley D. Griffin, son of Bradley Griffin of Tampa, and Jeanne Turner of Oldsmar, and a 2007 graduate of Robinson High School, Tampa.

Air Force Reserve Airman Andrew E. Lombardi Jr., son of Andrew and Linda Lombardi of Clearwater, and a 2007 graduate of Largo High.

Air Force Airman Christopher K. Barbosa, son of Alcino and Karla Barbosa of Palm Harbor, and a 2006 graduate of Tarpon Springs High School.

During six weeks of training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

Navy Seaman Jerdarian L. Hart, grandson of Alene L. Hart of Clearwater, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2007 graduate of Countryside High.

During the eight-week program, Hart completed classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

He also participated in "battle stations," an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

Airman Nathaniel Poston, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, completed his Basic Airman Training in Texas. Poston, the son of Felicia Berg of Palm Harbor, completed his Navy basic military requirement correspondence course as well as Airman and Petty Officer courses from the active duty advancement exams from Pensacola. He served as a Staff Cadet at a unit scuba diving course and received an honor staff cadet award at the first Navy League cadet wilderness training in early August. Poston is seeking a career in the military.

Cadet Reilly Nolan, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, completed his Sea Cadet recruit boot camp in Belle Glades. Nolan is the son of Patrick and Vicki Nolan of Oldsmar and a freshman at East Lake High School. He belongs to the Suncoast Squadron based out of the Coast Guard Clearwater Air Station.

Cadet Mitchell Palmer, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, son of Donna Palmer of Clearwater and Rick Palmer of Pinellas Park, graduated from a condensed style Navy boot camp in Groveland. Palmer was chosen as the lead cadet of his company while he was at training. Cadet Palmer is a certified scuba diver and a member of the Suncoast Squadron based out of the U.S. Coast Guard Clearwater Air Station.

Seaman Joseph Davis, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, graduated from a 20 day Amphibious Operations Training Course at Norfolk Naval Base, Norfolk, Va. and was scuba certified earlier this year. Davis, the son of Tom and Carole Davis of Clearwater, is a senior at Countryside High and is dual-enrolled at St. Petersburg College. He is a member of the Suncoast Squadron based out of the Coast Guard Clearwater Air Station and is seeking a career in military.

Chief Petty Officer Stephen Hartnett, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, son of Stephen and Katie Hartnett of Clearwater, returned from a 15 day special International Exchange/Training with the Netherlands Sea Cadet Corps onboard the Dutch vessel MV Bulgia.

Hartnett's itinerary included Alkmaar and Amsterdam-Netherlands, English Channel crossings, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and London. Hartnett earned a citation for his outstanding performance and high praise from the Dutch officers. He is a senior in the International Baccalaureate program at Palm Harbor University and seeking a career as an officer in the Navy or Army.
