Two things made life difficult for Mitchell on Monday afternoon at Heritage Isles in the Class 2A, Region 4 tournament: A slow start and a loaded field.

By day's end, the Mustangs had placed fourth.

And well, that wasn't all bad.

"I'm proud of how everyone played," Mitchell coach Joe Castellano said.

Mitchell finished with a 356 team total.

Durant, which had all four players shoot 83 or better, won with 311. Wharton (314), which was second, also advances to state.

Alex Milan, however, was the story.

A spectacular 8-under-par 64 left competitors of the Sickles sophomore in the dust - and in awe. She made eight birdies in a bogey-free round.

"I'm super excited," Milan said. "It's just an adrenaline high."

Mitchell was led by sisters Rebecca (78) and Megan Van Etten (79). After mediocre beginnings to their respective rounds, each responded with sensational back nines. Rebecca was even on the home side; Megan was 2-over.

"We just got off to a tough start and it was tough to bounce back," Castellano said. "But the team was 20 shots better on the back than the front. If we had doubled our back-nine score, we might have been in the hunt."

A-3: Bulldogs' strides not quite enough

In Gainesville, Zephyrhills slashed 40 strokes off its district performance but it wasn't enough to advance to state for a fifth-place finish in Class A, Region 3 after shooting 404. Citrus took first with a team-low 352 followed by Gainesville Oak Hall (360).

No North Suncoast girl advanced to state. Hernando junior Lauren Shuford shot 81. Saddlebrook senior Ankita Tiwana shot 81, and her freshman teammate Lauren Riehle 80. The Bulldogs' top finisher was junior Sarah Bainisezewski with 95. Ashley Zullo shot 98, Laurren McLeod 99 and freshman Megan Huppert 112.
