OBITUARIES

ALTMAN, Charles Thurman 83, of South Pasadena, passed away Friday, Oct. 17. He was a native of Dunn, NC. While serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 he met and married Ethel Frost in 1945. They moved from Michigan to this area in 1959, and established Charlie's Transmission Service on St. Pete Beach. Charlie most treasured his loving wife of 63 years, their vacations to Las Vegas, family gatherings, the successful business that he handed down to his children, and working in his yard. He is survived by his sister, Nellie in North Carolina; 2 daughters, Linda Swanson and Cheryl Altman; 2 sons, Charles R. and John Altman; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Chad, Kari, Kristi, Amy, and Robby; 2 great-grandchildren, Emma Kate and Joshua Charles, and was expecting three more. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home, where the family will also receive friends Thursday Oct. 23 from 5-7. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the American Cancer Society.

BRINKER, Bernhardt A. 85, of Clearwater died on Oct 20, 2008 at Oaks of Clearwater. He was born in Queens, NY and he came here in 1988 from Rochester, NY. He was an Army veteran of WWII and served with the Infantry, Corps of Engineers and with Ordinance. He was a Research Engineer with Sperry Gyroscaope Company, Sylvania Electronic tube Division and University of Rochester, NY Nuclear Structure Lab & the Laser Fusion Lab. He had published several scientific papers pertaining to Nuclear Fusion Fuel Cells. He was an Elder in the United Presbyterian Church, attended St. Bredan RC Church and was a member of the Moose Lodge #1030. Survivors include his wife, Elisabeth, son, Bernhard of Colorado; his daughter, Diane Phillips of Belleair Beach and 4 grandchildren, Robert, Jennifer, Lindsay, Jon Brinker; and 2 great-grandchildren. BUNTROCK, John H. 78, of South Pasadena, died Wednesday Oct. 15, 2008, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. Born in Waukon, IA, he received his BA from the University of Iowa and worked as an electrical engineer for Lockheed California. He was an Army veteran of Korea. DANIELS, Sandra Loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on Oct. 10th at the age of 59. DAVIS, George W. Jr. U.S. Navy (Ret.) 76, of Oviedo, FL, was transferred to a celestial station on Oct. 18, 2008. He was born April 11, 1932, in Bowling Green, FL, moving to Oviedo from Hawaii in 1995. George retired from the U.S. Navy in Feb. 1971, having served in Korea and Vietnam with more than 20 years active duty and then with the Department of Veteran's Affairs with more than 23 years service. He had been a member of the Fleet Reserve Association for many years. George was predeceased by his parents, George W. Davis, Sr. and Hazel Pearl Smith Davis. LAWSON, Phyllis M. 88, passed away on Oct. 20, 2008, in St. Petersburg, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Worcester, MA to John and Gina Morelli on Feb. 17, 1920, and moved to St. Petersburg in 1967. She was a graduate of Worcester City School of Nursing. In 1943, she volunteered for service in the Army Nurse Corps and was assigned to a field hospital in England during World War II. Mrs. Lawson obtained the rank of First Lieutenant and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. As the spouse of a military officer, she lived in a variety of locations in the United States and also in Germany. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Raphael's Church. She enjoyed preparing large meals for her family and was an avid gardener. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Colonel George A. Lawson, Sr. USAF (Ret.) of St. Petersburg; 2 sons, George A Lawson, Jr. of Aiken, SC, and Dr. J. Mark Lawson of Chesapeake, VA; and 2 daughters, Ceci L. Shannon of Birmingham, AL and Lori L. Rutland of St. Petersburg. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Assad of Metairie, LA; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. MELLEN, Mildred Ann 85, a former longtime resident of Gulfport, died Feb. 2, 2008, in Napa, CA. Mildred was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Rocky Bay, Nova Scotia, the daughter of John and Margaret Doyle. She was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and spent more than 27 years serving as an LPN at convalescent centers throughout the region. Her life was dedicated to Elder Care and even in later years she enjoyed visiting local care homes entertaining residents as part of her harmonica club. Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lawrence Joseph Mellen in 1987. She is survived by her sons Lawrence Wayne Mellen of Napa and Robert Francis Mellen of Punta Gorda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am, Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Gulfport. PAULISSEN, Johanna "Jo" died of cancer on Oct. 19, 2008, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Sulgen, Germany on March 3, 1923. After emigrating to America, Jo was raised in Chicago by her parents Otto and Maria Herzog. While working at HotPoint, she met her future husband, Robert "Bob" Paulissen, whom she wed in 1951. The family moved to Florida in 1958. Jo volunteered her time at St. Jude's church and school. Her interests included golf, bowling, and playing bridge. She was very generous supporting many charities. Jo was a devoted wife and unselfish mother. She shamelessly spoiled her grandchildren. She instilled in her family a love of card games, puzzles, board games and sports. She is survived by her husband Robert; her daughters Chris, Kathy & Mary and their husbands Tommy, Rich and Tom; her grandchildren Jennifer and husband Doug, Adam, Robert, Melissa, John and his wife Lillian, Kim, Ryan and his wife Taryn, Nicole; and 2 great-granddaughters, Julianna and Taylor. SANDO, Arlene E. 87, of the Allendale neighborhood in St. Petersburg, died Oct. 17 at St. Anthony's Hospital after a short illness. Born in Ruff and Ready near Sunbury, PA in 1921, she moved to St. Petersburg in 1956, from Windsor, CT. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and was a Registered Nurse. She rose to the position of Director of Education of a nursing school in Reading, PA before marrying Stewart F. Sando and moving to Windsor, CT to start a family. After moving to St. Petersburg and raising her 5 children, she returned to nursing at St. Anthony's Hospital where she held the position of Head Nurse for the Eye Surgery floor, then the largest eye surgery center south of Atlanta. After retiring a second time from active duty nursing, she was elected to the position of Secretary of the State Board of Directors of the Florida Nurse's Association. She maintained her licenses to practice nursing in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Florida for another 10 years after retiring from her nurse's association activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart F. Sando. Survivors include her sons Stewart F. Sando, Jr. of Pasadena, California, Neil R. Sando of St. Petersburg, and Scott E. Sando of St. Petersburg; her daughters Vici C. Hopkins of St. Petersburg and Janet M. Burel of Orlando; and 8 grandchildren.
