PHU VOLLEYBALL THIRD IN TOURNEY

Palm Harbor University defeated host school Bradenton Southeast 25-18, 25-16 in the gold division consolation game to take third place out of 16 teams at the Lady 'Noles Volleyball Invitational on Saturday.

The Hurricanes advanced to the gold division semifinals after finishing pool play 3-0 with victories over Sarasota Riverview, North Port and Lake Wales. In the semis, PHU dropped a 25-21, 25-22 decision to eventual champion Niceville.

"We were okay, but we could have played better," PHU coach Tara Kuk said. "Niceville was one of the best teams we've played all year. At moments we looked really good. At other times, we couldn't convert our opportunities like we're capable of doing."

PHU's Cassie Roy was one of six players named to the all-tournament team. Morgan Kosterlitz was an honorable mention selection.

Cougars third at Edgewater Invite

Countryside's boys cross country team planned to run at the Little Everglades Prestate meet but did not register in time. So the Cougars did the next best thing and ran at the Edgewater Invitational at Trotter's Park in Orlando.

The meet attracted some of the top teams in the Orlando area, many of which Countryside could see at regions and state.

The Cougars took third overall in the Class 4A race, behind Orlando Dr. Phillips and Orlando Colonial.

Zach Christenson, Countryside's No. 1 runner, was ninth in 16:53. The Cougars had all five runners finish in the top 32, with Jake Hermann (20th) and Nick Ribble (21) placing in the top 21.
