Helga Curtis, 87, has taught a quilting class for 10 years. "I used to design clothes," she said. "Everything I learned doing that, I'm teaching them." The quilting style Curtis teaches is applique, and all of the stitching is done by hand. "I didn't sew a stitch till I came here," said Doreen Cropley, a nine-year veteran of Curtis' class. "She's a great teacher." The class is offered through the Hernando County Recreation Department, and though many in the class are advanced, Curtis says she's willing to teach beginners. The quilters meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays in the activity trailer at Delta Woods Park.
