It wasn't a fluke. There weren't any chip-ins or miraculous sand saves.
Alex Milan was on, and that's all there was to it.
Her drives were good. Her approaches were better. And the four times she missed a green in regulation, she easily got up and down for par.
The result: A spectacular 8-under-par 64 Monday afternoon at Heritage Isles in the Class 2A, Region 4 tournament that left competitors of the Sickles sophomore in the dust - and in awe.
"I'm super excited," Milan said. "It's just an adrenaline high."
Milan's round gave her a three-stroke victory over Wharton's Shena Yang, who shot only67. In team competition, Durant, which had all four players shoot 83 or better, won with a 311 total. Wharton (314) also advances to state.
Milan's eight-birdie round was a career low by five shots.
And, "it could have been better," Milan said.
She missed birdie putts inside 10 feet on her final two holes.
"She could have easily had a 61 or 62," Sickles coach Mark Mann said.
Durant was led by Erika Wardzinski (73) and Amy West (74).
"You can't ask for anything more," Cougars coach Dick Sheffield said.
After Yang, Brittany Bradshaw (80) posted the next lowest score for Wharton.
