PHILLIES MYTHS AND MYSTERIES

...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

What exactly is a Phillie?
ItÍs not a horse. ItÍs really nothing, technically. In 1883, when the Worcester (Mass.) Ruby Legs were disbanded and were moved to Philadelphia by the National League, new owner Al Reach named his team the Phillies as a takeoff on the city of Philadelphia. Not too original, but it probably works better than the Ruby Legs. Now, the Phillies are the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional sports.
Do Philly fans really miss the Vet?
Unbelievably, yes. Much like your little brother, you can make fun of it, but others canÍt. Make no mistake, Veterans Stadium, where the Phillies played for 33 years, didnÍt go down as revered classic architecture like the Louvre. But in Philly, it was theirs. The walk along Pattison Avenue included two statues and one memorial to honor the Vet. In one of the Citizens Bank Park parking lots, there's a granite and bronze marker where home plate used to be. Now thatÍs a tribute.
Did Phillies CF Shane Victorino have another calling?
Yes. The Hawaiian-born Victorino Ñ who spent most of seven years in the minors Ñ was once recruited to be a slot receiver at the University of Hawaii but instead decided to pursue baseball after the Dodgers drafted him in the sixth round in 1999. But Hawaii coach June Jones believed he had an NFL future in football. He definitely had the speed, winning state track championships in the 100m, 200m and 400m in Hawaii.
Did the Phillies once wear the ugliest uniforms ever?
With all due respect to the old Astros rainbow threads and the banana-colored Pirates jerseys, the Phillies once had an all-burgundy uniform they planned to wear for Saturday home games. But the Phillies wore them only one time Ñ May 19, 1979. That day they lost to the Expos, and the threads werenÍt popular with fans, who said they looked like pajamas (minus the footies and trap door).
Why do some of Brad LidgeÍs teammates call him "Indiana Lidge"?
When the Phillies closer isnÍt pitching perfect ninth innings, heÍs studying toward a degree in religious studies through an online program at Regis University in Denver. He has been interested in archeology and religion since studying undergrad at Notre Dame. He is fascinated by the ruins and artifacts of the early days of Christianity in Europe. You ask, why spend 10-12 hours a week doing online work when you could pitch any night? Lidge recently told the Philadelphia Daily News, "Honestly, IÍve been doing a little of it because itÍs nice to have something to keep me distracted. When weÍre at the field weÍre thinking about baseball, clearly. ItÍs nice to have something distracting when you go home, take your mind off of it, just relax and do something else."
What does reliever Chad Durbin do in the offseason?
Durbin is the co-founder of ShowcaseU, a Web site that serves as a forum for high school athletes to increase their chances of being recruited by college and pro scouts. Through the site, athletes can upload highlight video, express interests in colleges, talk to other high school athletes and send messages to college coaches.
Does 1B Ryan Howard really buy into Subway with the same addiction as that Jared guy?
Still unknown. But the new Subway pitch man did go to the Little League World Series this summer to pitch healthy eating. For the record: There were no 6-inch veggies seen by his locker Tuesday.
