The runoff is between a lawyer and a teacher, both of whom say theyÍll bring a fresh perspective to the board.

Nina Hayden, Clearwater Sean OÍFlannery, Pinellas Park
Hayden, 33, an attorney in the Pinellas-Pasco public defenderÍs office, is making her first run for the School Board. She has participated in Lawyers for Literacy program, Great American Teach-in, and volunteers as a mentor for Doorways scholarship program. She serves on the boards of Your Place, a youth center, and St. Petersburg Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She belongs to the Pinellas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Fred G. Minnis Bar Association. Experience OÍFlannery, 40, is making his second run for School Board after securing a spot in the run-off election in 2006. A graduate of Clearwater High School, he has been a history teacher and volleyball coach at Lakewood High in St. Petersburg since November 1996. He is a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. His military honors include the Marine of the Quarter Award for outstanding leadership and the Meritorious Mast for outstanding service. He serves as a reserve law enforcement officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

"I believe I bring an air of professionalism because IÍm an attorney. I think itÍs important to have teachers as School Board members, but I also think itÍs important to have people who arenÍt teachers to bring a fresh, new perspective." What they consider their strengths "This seat is only for two years. As a teacher, IÍm able to hit the ground running. IÍm in the position of being close to the teachers and support staff. I can listen to the issues and go out into the school system and get actual answers."
Match struggling students with mentors and concentrate on career technical education options for high school students to stem the dropout rate; re-evaluate alternative programs that often "label" children; supports decentralizing the system and bringing decision-making to the school level. What he/she would do to make a difference Concentrate on "trimming the fat" to make sure resources stay in the classroom; focus raising the graduation rate; find money in the budget to reward teachers who deserve bonuses so they donÍt leave the field; approach school-based management cautiously, making sure principals receive the necessary training and support.
Wants to keep students out of the juvenile justice system. She would favor a plan that looks at student offenses on a case-by-case basis rather than continuing to enforce "zero tolerance," in which students are expelled and transferred to alternative schools for alcohol, drug and weapons possession. The issue where they differ the most OÍFlannery thinks the district should uphold a strict zero-tolerance policy for egregious offenses such as alcohol, drug and weapons possession as a deterrent to other students who might commit similar acts and to ensure that principals have a clear policy to follow.
