This race is a replay of 2006, when Hillsborough County Commissioner Kathy Castor faced business owner Eddie Adams Jr. Castor and won easily.

Rep. Kathy Castor, Tampa D Eddie Adams Jr., Tampa R
Kathy Castor, 42, worked as a land use attorney and assistant general counsel for the Florida Department of Community Affairs before winning a seat on the Hillsborough County Commission in 2002. On the commission, she advocated for ethics reform and growth management. She was elected to Congress in 2006. Regarding accomplishments, she cites legislation to maintain affordable student loans for college. She has also conducted numerous workshops for homeowners facing foreclosure, and brought federal funding to the University of South Florida medical complex and the James A. Haley VA Medical Center, which she says merges her interests in job creation and better health care for veterans. Experience Adams, 55, was a cardiopulmonary laboratory technologist for nearly 20 years at Tampa General Hospital before earning a degree in architecture in 1995. He worked at Rosier/Jones Associates Inc. Architects and Planners in St. Petersburg for six years before starting his own firm, Adams & Associates Residential Design. AdamsÍ priorities include lower taxes, small government, making more money available for the local communities and finding alternative energy. His civic involvement includes the board of Central City YMCA, the Hillsborough County SheriffÍs Black Advisory Council and Hillsborough County NAACP executive committee.
BachelorÍs degree, Emory University; law degree, Florida State University. Education BachelorÍs degree, USF: masterÍs in architecture from Florida A&M University/USF joint program.
Supports maintaining the existing drilling ban off FloridaÍs coast, saying itÍs essential to protect the stateÍs tourism and fishing industries. What is your position on the offshore oil drilling ban? "We cannot NOT drill off the coast of Florida," Adams says. "We can no longer ignore the resources the United States has. WeÍre spending money overseas that we need to be spending on our own economy." Adams says Florida could also harness the gulf stream around the state to produce hydroelectricity.
Castor would like to see a national health care system modeled after Hillsborough CountyÍs, with tax dollars funding focused on preventive care. How would you change health care? "If you look at the VA system Ñ thatÍs universal health care the way the federal government does it. ItÍs a horrible system."
"The biggest threat is the resurgence of the Taliban and al-Qaida on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border," Castor says. She backs a "responsible redeployment" of troops from Iraq, that would bring soldiers home and direct more resources to Afghanistan. What are your priorities for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? The war needs to be properly funded so it can be ended and the troops can come home, Adams says.
