Republican candidate Adam Putnam, 34, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2001, after serving four years in FloridaÍs House. Since being elected, he has risen in the ranks to become the third-most powerful Republican in the House. He was elected in 2006 to the House Republican Conference, and he sits on the Republican Steering Committee and the Financial Services Committee. He lives in Bartow, where his family owns a citrus and cattle business, Putnam Groves, Inc. Experience Democratic candidate Doug Tudor, 45, joined the Navy in 1983. He left the military briefly, but went back to serve for a total of 20 years, rising to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He has served in Virginia, Iceland, Germany and at MacDill Air Force Base. He spent much of that time as a flag writer, doing administrative duties for military leaders, including Gen. Tommy Franks and Adm. William Fallon. He retired in February and lives in Riverview with his wife and three children.
Putnam graduated in 1995 with a bachelorÍs degree in food and resource economics from the University of Florida. Education Tudor received a bachelorÍs degree in political science from the University of Maryland in 1998, and an executive juris doctorate from Concord University in 2007.
"Any waters inside of 100 miles should be under the control of the state and outside of 100 miles should be a debate for Congress. And any royalties must be shared with the state." What is your position on the 125-mile offshore oil drilling ban? The restriction should extend to 225 miles and it should take a super majority to overturn. It should be a federal law that states canÍt overturn.
He supports small business health plans, where associations, such as Realtors and restaurant owners, can pool their employees and negotiate for health care under an association health plan. "I think that gives small businesses more leverage to negotiate better benefits at a lower cost," he said. Would you change anything about the healthcare system? He advocates a single-payer healthcare system, which some call a "super Medicare." It would be a non-profit system run through the government. "IÍve been on government healthcare my entire life because my dad was military, I was military and now IÍm retired military. I know healthcare is an area where the government knows how to provide it better and cheaper than private industry."
He supports pulling some troops from Iraq because the region has stabilized due to the troop surge, he said. He also supports putting additional troops in Afghanistan, "especially with a destabilized Pakistan," he said. What are your priorities for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? He wants to end military involvement in Iraq "safely, smartly and quickly," bringing the troops home and sending two divisions to Afghanistan. He wants to have a clear plan for how those forces in Afghanistan would be used, and would set a tentative date for withdrawal.
