The Mariners hired Brewers special assistant Jack Zduriencik as their general manager Wednesday.
Zduriencik, 57, replaces Bill Bavasi, who was fired in June, and takes over for interim Lee Pelekoudas. Known for his skill in drafting players, Zduriencik worked with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.
Since arriving in Milwaukee in 1999, the team drafted Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks as well as 2007 NL rookie of the year Ryan Braun, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Yovani Gallardo and Manny Parra, the foundation of this year's playoff team.
"Seattle is an outstanding organization with great fans, a great ballpark and an ownership group committed to the goal of bringing a World Series to the Northwest," said Zduriencik, who has worked with major-league teams for 25 years. "I believe that working together, we can make the Mariners a model franchise."
Seattle was the first team with a $100-million payroll to lose 100 games in a season.
WORLD CLASSIC: Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols will be on the Dominican Republic's roster in next year's World Baseball Classic. Pujols, a favorite to win his second NL MVP, will be joined by Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano, Angels OF Vladimir Guerrero and Mets RHP Pedro Martinez, manager Stan Javier said.
ASTROS: Third-base coach Ed Romero was promoted to bench coach, and Triple-A Round Rock manager Dave Clark replaced Romero. The rest of the coaching staff was retained.
D'BACKS: The team retained its entire coaching staff for next season under manager Bob Melvin.
RANGERS: Former A's manager Jackie Moore was named bench coach and Dave Anderson named third-base coach.
RED SOX: First-base coach Luis Alicea will not be offered a contract.
