OBITUARIES

ALTMAN, Charles Thurman 83, of South Pasadena, passed away Friday, Oct. 17. He was a native of Dunn, NC. While serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 he met and married Ethel Frost in 1945. They moved from Michigan to this area in 1959, and established Charlie's Transmission Service on St. Pete Beach. Charlie most treasured his loving wife of 63 years, their vacations to Las Vegas, family gatherings, the successful business that he handed down to his children, and working in his yard. He is survived by his sister, Nellie in North Carolina; 2 daughters, Linda Swanson and Cheryl Altman; 2 sons, Charles R. and John Altman; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Chad, Kari, Kristi, Amy, and Robby; 2 great-grandchildren, Emma Kate and Joshua Charles, and was expecting three more. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home, where the family will also receive friends Thursday Oct. 23 from 5-7. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the American Cancer Society.

COOK, Donald "Donnie" 57, of Lutz, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bernice; son, Justin; 4 sisters, Lyndia (Dale) Black, Rheda (Glen) Rowell, Kathy (Jimmy) Elrod, and Darlene (Derek) Kirkland; and brother, Ronald Cook. HUNZEKER, Dorothea H. 91, of St. Petersburg, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at her son's residence. Mrs. Hunzeker came to this area during WWII from North Bend Nebraska and moved to Florida with her husband when he retired in 1974. She is of Catholic Faith. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Hunzeker and her son Thomas Hunzeker both of Annandale. She is also survived by a sister in North Bend, NE. A graveside service will be held on Oct. 24, 2008, 10:30 am at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

MELLEN, Mildred Ann 85, a former longtime resident of Gulfport, died Feb. 2, 2008, in Napa, CA. Mildred was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Rocky Bay, Nova Scotia, the daughter of John and Margaret Doyle. She was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and spent more than 27 years serving as an LPN at convalescent centers throughout the region. Her life was dedicated to Elder Care and even in later years she enjoyed visiting local care homes entertaining residents as part of her harmonica club. Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lawrence Joseph Mellen in 1987. She is survived by her sons Lawrence Wayne Mellen of Napa and Robert Francis Mellen of Punta Gorda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am, Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Gulfport. Private Committal will follow in the Bay Pines National Cemetery, Bay Pines.

MOCK, Bernard J. Sr. "Bernie" 82, of Clearwater, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 at Sunset Point Rehab & Nursing Center under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He moved here in 1955 from his native Milwaukee, WI and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bernie never met a stranger and had a very "sweet" smile for everyone. He was an insurance salesman, owned an Oreck Vacuum store in Sebring and operated the stores in Clearwater and Largo. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Claire; 3 sons, Bernie Jr., Robert, and Richard; 2 daughters, Sharon Davids and Therese Banning; a stepdaughter, Jeri Lynn Maler; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A memorial will be held at 2:30 pm, Sunday, Oct. 26 Sunset Point Rehab. & Nursing with interment at Bay Pines National Cemetery later. SAAVEDRA-CLARK, Rogelia 83, of Largo, passed away at Tierra Pines Nursing Center under Hospice Care surrounded by loving family. She was born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in 1925. She lived in NYC for 50 years. She moved to Largo in 1979. She was Catholic and a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. She is survived by her loving husband, of 35 years Mr. John J. Clark; daughter, Mirta (Mitzi) Saavedra; stepchildren, Susan Clark Myers, Elizabeth LaBlance and proceeded in death by stepson, John W. Clark; granddaughter, Lisa Alvarez and greatgrandson, Joseph Alvarez; she also leaves behind a sister, Nina Moncayo and loving family members and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. SIERRA, Virginia "Della" 77, of Hudson, passed away on Oct. 18, 2008. Della was born in Plant City on March 13, 1931 and grew up in Moultrie, GA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Huey Lee Vaughn and Amanda Childree Vaughn; her loving husband, Miguel Angel Sierra; her brothers, Huey Vaughn and Roy Vaughn; her sisters, Lucy Molenaar and Eathel Hernandez. She is survived by her caring and loving sisters, Dora (Alex) Edwards, Dottie Howells, Ruth Newlands, Juanita (Scott) Daddis; and brother, Foy (Marilyn) Vaughn; her adoring children, V. Joyce (Tony) Zilinsky, C. Rejene (Steve) Holt, J. Conrad (Anna) Cook, S. Gary Cook, Michael T. Sierra, Judy-Lynn (Gene) Galbreth and Pamela K. (Mark) Phelps; her 15 precious grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Della devoted her life to caring for her family, who always came first. Her passions were embracing love and life, her beautiful flowers and nature.
