Penalties hurt King all night, none more costly than in double overtime when an offsides infraction led to Sickles' Scott O'Donoghue running for a decisive two-point conversion in a Class 5A, District 6 game.
Sickles (2-6, 1-1) was set to kick an extra point after Cullen O'Brien's 1-yard run pulled the Gryphons within 17-16. King (2-5, 0-2) lined up offsides before the play, and Sickles coach Pat O'Brien went for the win after the penalty was marked off inside the 2.
The game was tied at 3-all through regulation, and both teams scored in the first overtime. In the second extra session, Keith Graham's 1-yard run and Darrell Dudney's extra point gave King a 17-10 lead.
King held a 260-142 edge in offensive yards. Penalties hurt the Lions early as they failed to score despite moving to the Sickles 5 and 27 on their first two series.
