Shane McEwen would not break stride as his final touchdown broke Mitchell's back. Wharton's junior running back rushed for 113 yards and scored twice in the second half to secure Wharton's win in a key Class 5A, District 5 game.
The victory vaulted Wharton (6-2, 2-0) into the playoffs and knocked out Mitchell (4-3, 0-2). Wharton faces Gaither for the district title in two weeks. Wharton's rushing attack also included Jairus Jones (64 yards, one touchdown) and quarterback Andrew Clifford (two 1-yard TD runs).
Mitchell's highlight was Ricky Trinidad's 85-yard kickoff to Wharton's 5 to open the third quarter. That setup a 1-yard touchdown run by Ryan Gallagher. But then McEwen broke out with a 5-yard scoring run for a 30-19 lead. He then took a pass from Clifford 69 yards for the final TD.
