NEW PORT RICHEY
In less than four months, the black Labrador mix went from emaciated and homeless to nourished and loved. Justice has been served. Justice, so named by the SPCA Suncoast workers who wanted just that for the abandoned pup, made headlines in July when a couple found the 19-pound dog wandering in a Wal-Mart parking lot, neglected and starving. After months of medical care and multiple feedings a day, Justice has doubled his weight, SPCA Suncoast executive director Martha Murray said. The foster family that nursed him back to health decided to keep him permanently, she said. "Justice is a true example of the perseverance of spirit," Murray said. "When we added the components of love and care, he just blossomed." Now a success story, Justice will serve as the "honorary canine chair" of SPCA Suncoast's second annual Howliday Festival of Lights. He will make a special appearance at the Howliday Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the SPCA shelter, 7734 Congress St. People may sponsor individual lights for $10 apiece or animal enclosures for $100 to raise money for animals in need. For information, call the shelter at (727) 849-1048.
Take a look at plans for trails
Experts have laid out a plan for greenways, blueways and trails across Pasco County. Next month the public will get a chance to look at those maps and offer input. The community workshop will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Land O'Lakes Recreation Complex gymnasium, 3032 Collier Parkway, Land O'Lakes. A recurring presentation on the project will be given at 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Ultimately, a master plan outlining these corridors and trails will be submitted to the County Commission for approval. Pasco County is undertaking the effort with help from the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. For information or to RSVP for the workshop, contact Milinda Butz at (813) 929-1260 or e-mail email@example.com.
Many offices closing for holiday
