In recognition of Weatherization Day on Thursday , Mid-Florida Community Services wants to remind homeowners of its weatherization program.

Low-income homeowners who qualify can receive free weatherization repairs and measures designed to reduce home energy costs by eliminating air infiltration. Repairing or replacing heating and air-conditioning units is also available.

The office also has information and tips available to anyone interested in becoming energy smart.

Kennel Club to hold dog show Nov. 8-9

The Hernando County Kennel Club will present the All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trials Nov. 8-9 at Florida Classic Park, 5360 Lockhart Road, off Cortez Boulevard, east of Brooksville.

Prior to the event, canine good citizen testing will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7. The cost is $5 per dog, plus a $5 parking fee. Only dogs that are eligible for AKC registration will be allowed to participate. Dogs must also be at least 6 months old and current on their vaccinations.

Show hours will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. A microchip clinic will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days; it's $25 to have a pet microchipped.

Poker run to help buy presents for veterans

The American Legion Riders Post 186 will host a fundraiser poker run Nov. 9 to help buy Christmas presents for the 120 veterans at Lopez State Veterans' Nursing Home in Land O'Lakes. The event is sponsored by the Nature Coast Volunteers for Veterans.

Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon at American Legion Post 186, 12091 Cortez Blvd. The cost is $10 per person, which includes a buffet dinner at the American Legion after the run.

The last bike out will be at noon. Stops include VFW Post 9236 on Shoal Line Boulevard in Hernando Beach, VFW Post 335 in New Port Richey and VFW Post 8681 at County Line Road and Drayton Street in Shady Hills.

The last bike should arrive back at the American Legion at 5 p.m., where there will be the dinner, music, raffles and prizes.

First-place prize is $100 for the best poker hand, second place wins $50 and the worst hand wins $25.

Register to 'Run with the Sheriff' on Nov. 8

Registrations are being accepted for the annual Run with the Sheriff - 5K Challenge, which will be at 8 a.m. Nov. 8 at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation, 11210 Cortez Blvd. Final check-in will be at 7 a.m.

Sponsorships are available in $100, $200 and $300 increments, which includes the company logo on all shirts, complimentary race entries and goodie packets. Proceeds will benefit the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services.

The cost to participate in the race is $12 for those who register in advance and $17 on race day. A free Kids Fun Run will follow immediately after the 5K challenge. Those who preregister will receive a long-sleeve event shirt.

Awards will be given for overall first-place male, female and master categories, and five-deep in each five-year age groups from 14 to 75 and older. Medals will be awarded to all Kids Fun Run participants.

Brick sponsors needed for memorial area

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 invites veterans, businesses and anyone interested to sponsor a brick for a memorial pond and freedom walk to be built at the post's new home at 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, off Anderson Snow Road.

Bricks are $50, which includes the cost of engraving. The memorial, spearheaded by post member "Wild" Bill Taylor, will include the brick memorial wall, a flag walkway, fountains, railings, bushes and floodlights.
