PARIS - Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro boosted their chances of making next month's Masters Cup by winning their second-round matches Tuesday at the Paris Masters.
No.3 seed Novak Djokovic led Dmitry Tursunov 6-2, 4-3 when the Russian retired with an injured right shoulder. No.7 Roddick topped Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, and No.9 del Potro defeated Mario Ancic 6-0, 6-4.
The ATP's top eight make the Masters Cup Nov.9-16 in Shanghai. Roddick was sixth in points and del Potro seventh heading into this week's indoor event.
DAVIS CUP:Roger Federer said he will play for Switzerland against the United States in March.
SOCCER:Joey Barton scored in his first start since his jail sentence as Newcastle beat West Brom 2-1 in the English Premier League. Barton served 74 days in jail this year for a fight in a fast-food restaurant in December in Liverpool.
CYCLING: Alberto Contador won't race in the 2009 Giro d'Italia and might also miss his home country's top race, the Spanish Vuelta, to focus on the Tour de France.
GOLF: Hunter Mahan beat U.S. Ryder Cup teammate Anthony Kim on the second playoff hole to win the Kiwi Challenge in Wellington, New Zealand. Mahan shot 65 for 8-under 136 in the four-man event.
BOXING: The fight that left Oscar Diaz in a coma for two months was conducted within Texas state laws and rules, a state report said. Diaz couldn't leave his corner after 10 rounds against Delvin Rodriguez in San Antonio in July. Diaz came out of a coma last month.
