More than three weeks before the state playoffs, Nature Coast's football team finds itself where no previous Sharks team has been.

In the state poll.

The Sharks (7-0) are 10th in the Associated Press' latest Class 3A state rankings, marking their first poll appearance since the program began varsity play in 2004.

"We're really excited about it," Sharks coach Jamie Joyner said. "It's something we talked about honestly last year and this year. It's kind of been a goal of ours. It really doesn't mean anything, but for us it's a milestone."

Ex-Cat's juco team in playoffs

In his first junior college season, former Wesley Chapel quarterback Greg Jenkins has reached a goal he never could attain in high school: the playoffs.

The starter at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jenkins totaled 140 yards (100 passing, 40 rushing) and watched his opportunistic defense score three times in Thursday night's 41-8 rout of Jones.

With the win, the Bulldogs (7-2) clinched the South Division of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Athletic Conference, and face Northwest (6-3) in Saturday's first round of the MACJC state playoffs.

"I'm not satisfied just to be here," Jenkins said in a text message Tuesday. "I want to win it all."

Of all the district tournament matches being played over the next few days, this Class 5A, District 7 semifinal shapes up as one of the most interesting. The Rams and Bears, seeded second and third, respectively, split their two regular-season matches. Ridgewood, in fact, earned the No. 2 seed by a coin toss. Both possess quality wins (Ridgewood topped Mitchell; Central upset Nature Coast) and both are well aware of tonight's stakes: The winner is in the playoffs.
