LHP Cole Hamels, who went 4-0 in the postseason and won Game 1 of the World Series, was named MVP, becoming just the fifth player to win two MVPs in the same postseason. He joins Willie Stargell (1979), Darrell Porter (1982), Orel Hershiser (1988) and Livan Hernandez (1997).
"I'm definitely going to have to enjoy this moment, because there's a lot of times you don't have everything go your way," Hamels, 24, said. "I was just fortunate to, I guess, be on the good ends of these victories and winning a trophy."
Chess match: Manager Charlie Manuel said he chose Geoff Jenkins to pinch hit for Hamels and lead off the bottom of the sixth inning because he wanted his other options - Greg Dobbs and Matt Stairs - available for the eighth and ninth innings.
"Also, when I sent Jenkins up, if they had brought a left-handed pitcher, I already made my mind up I was going to let him hit, because he's capable of hitting the ball out of the yard," Manuel said. "And I wanted to keep (So) Taguchi and (Eric) Bruntlett basically for defense in the later innings. So therefore, I was going to let Jenkins hit all the way. Jenkins got a big hit."
Jenkins doubled off Grant Balfour and scored for a 3-2 lead.
Out of the loop: RHP Brett Myers said it was for the best that Manuel kept from the players - as Joe Maddon did with the Rays - that Game 5 would be played to nine innings before the game Monday as the teams and MLB scrambled for scenarios to address impending rain. "I guess it's probably better," he said. "I think if we knew about it, that would have taken away from what we really had to go out and accomplish."
Phillers:Brad Lidge's Game 5 save made him 48-for-48 this season: 41 in the regular season, seven in the playoffs (two in the World Series.) ... The Phillies became just the second team (1999 Yankees) to go undefeated at home in the playoffs since the advent of three-round postseason play. ... The parents of CF Shane Victorino had crates of leis shipped in from their native Hawaii for the celebration.
