Clearwater Central Catholic may have turned the corner two nights ago with a thrilling comeback to clinch a spot in the postseason, but what was lurking around that corner?
Just powerhouse Berkeley Prep, which reminded the Marauders there is still a long ways to go with a commanding 25-10, 25-18, 25-19 victory to capture the Class 3A, District 11 championship. The victory gave the Bucs (24-2) a 14th straight district title, and 22nd in the past 23 years according to coach Randy Dagostino.
Dagostino said he was impressed watching CCC rally from two games down in the semifinals the previous night, "but our serving was a little stronger than they expected ...they were never able to get into their offense.''
CCC coach Brian Imperiale concurred. He thought the Marauders (18-7) were a little worn out emotionally from their semifinal win over Holy Names, but got better as the night went on.
The Marauders were never in the first game, but managed leads in the second and third games early behind junior Mary Michael Toups and freshman Morgan O'Brien.
But every time CCC got something going, junior Lindsay Young (16 kills) or freshman Jordan Burgess (nine kills) would squash them.
