It became clear, Rose Antonini says, that McKitrick Elementary School needed a covered P.E. court two years ago.

That's when several students were overcome by the heat as they stood on risers during a concert on the paved playing courts.

"They were falling like flies," said Antonini, a parent who is on the PTA's board.

Since then, the court has been a top PTA priority. The group has raised $83,000 to raise a roof over the court and has been told it will get a match of up to $50,000 more from the school district.

But the PTA still needs to raise another $35,000, so it is holding an Autumn Nights fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Avila Golf & Country Club.

Once installed, the court roof would shield children and teachers from harmful UV rays, decrease the likelihood of heat exhaustion and provide additional meeting and assembly space at the school, organizers say.

The fundraiser will feature hors d'oeuvres, an auction and music by the Money Penny Band. Tickets are $25. To get tickets or become a sponsor, call the school at (813) 558-5427.
