LAKEWOOD COMES UP BIG

Northeast is no match for the taller Spartans, who make it look easy in a sweep.

Berkley Whaley had 14 kills and Taylor Whaley added 12 kills and six digs as Lakewood defeated Northeast 25-16, 25-13, 25-21 in the 5A-11 District final Thursday at Lakewood High School.

The Spartans will host a region quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

"I'm definitely proud of the squad as we had to play through some injuries," Lakewood coach Sean O'Flannery said. "We have a strong team and a well-balanced team. We needed everyone to contribute tonight."

Lakewood's height advantage proved to be difficult for the shorter Northeast team to overcome. Despite the size discrepancy, Northeast took early leads in each set before the Spartans' front line was able to take control.

Lakewood senior Lindsay Dodge led the defensive effort with four blocks.

"We were definitely trying to get some tips over and try to get them on the defensive a little bit," Northeast coach Lucas Wertz said. "We knew we were going to be facing a bigger team."

Teresa Leonard had 12 assists for the Vikings and Erin Hughes added 10 kills.
