SEX CHARGES PUSH TEACHER TO QUIT JOB

The Nature Coast band director had been suspended with pay.

Facing the near certainty of termination, not to mention criminal charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, Nature Coast Technical High School band director Tim Brightbill has resigned.

Hernando Schools officials said he signed papers Friday afternoon resigning his teaching post "in lieu of termination." He had been suspended with pay pending an investigation officials said could have led to his firing.

Brightbill, 42, was arrested Dec. 31 after being found atop a 17-year-old female student, according to police reports. The girl's mother discovered them at her home wearing only underwear, and Brightbill subsequently confessed to engaging in sex acts with her that day and on one previous occasion, police said.

Brightbill was arrested on New Year's Eve and spent six days in the Hernando County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, before posting bail Tuesday.
