MUELLER, Harold J. Passed away Feb. 16, 2009. Harold was born March 13, 1926, in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Alex and Hilda Mueller. He married Beatrice Lepsch in 1947, while serving as a Sergeant in the army. After his service, he finished his education at Marquette University. Upon graduating in 1947, Harold and Bea moved to La Crosse Wisconsin to embark upon raising a family and his chosen career as a high school teacher. In 1956, they moved back to Milwaukee where Harold joined his father in the underground utility construction industry. The Company was renamed Mueller Company in 1960, when Harold's brother, Bob, joined them. Over time, Mueller Company evolved into the MRM Technical Group, the largest distribution pipeline construction company in the United States. At its peak, the Company employed almost 3000 people. The company was one of Harold's true joys and he took great pride in challenging and developing its people. He believed anyone could accomplish great things if they were challenged, respected and provided the right tools and direction. His respectful caring touched the lives of employees in over 30 states, 3 countries and 2 continents. In return, he was deeply touched by each of them. The Company was the first in the industry to recognize that investing in its people was both a good business practice and a moral responsibility. Harold's philosophy was to invest in training and promote from within. Along those lines his company was the first in the industry to sponsor its own welding school. In 1989, the company started a management academy at Marquette University in Milwaukee. This three week intensive program was designed to help people discover their real abilities and to help them become confident and successful in their daily lives. More than 300 people took part INMRM Academy and many of them considered their time there to be a watershed moment in their lives. In 1998, the school was expanded to add a graduate academy in England for those that showed both dedication and a desire for continued self-improvement. Harold ensured that the management of the company recognized its moral responsibility for the man in the trenches. In Harold's opinion, the company existed for the benefit of the workers and not the benefit of the owners. This was recognized in 1999, when the company was sold. Employees and members of the employee stock program shared in over $50,000,000 of the proceeds from the sale. In addition to guiding MRM, Harold helped mentor many former employees as they embarked upon careers outside of the company. Many ascended into management positions with competitors and some successfully started and grew their own businesses. Regardless of the paths they chose, Harold always took pleasure from watching their success. Harold and Bea's philosophy of giving was not limited to the business. They also helped raise five children from the Ojibwa tribe at Sandy Lake, Ontario along with providing for the private education of two children from the city of Milwaukee (Glen and Crawford Allen). They took as much pride from the success of these children as they did their own. Harold civic service included Boy Scouts of America Troop Leader, New Berlin Lions Club, City of New Berlin School Board member and New Berlin Police Commission. He was the recipient of the New Berlin Citizen of the Year award, National Utility Contractor's "Ditch Digger of the Year" and, most recently, the Distribution Contractor's Association "Lifetime Achievement Award". Besides work, he enjoyed fishing, travel and helping to mentor his grandchildren as they embarked upon their own careers. Harold is survived by his beloved wife Beatrice; sons James (Jean), Michael (Deanna), Jerold (Elizabeth), Dennis (Kellie) and daughter Jane Koth (Charles); his brother Robert (Catherine) Mueller; 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Hilda; his sisters June Draeger and Pauline Biskobing; infant son Jon Mueller; grandsons Jon Koth and Joseph Mueller and great-grandchildren J.J. Mueller and Katherine Mueller. The family thanks the staff at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and Dr. Amin for their wonderful care. Always thanks to all the members of the MRM family for allowing him to be part of your life. There will be a service for family and local friends in Clearwater. A memorial mass will be planned at a later date in Milwaukee, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Malaika Early Learning Center, 125 W. Auer Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53212.
