BAKER, Richard L. 84, of Brooksville, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Kindred Hospital, Tampa. He was a native of Erie, PA and a resident of this area for the past 22 years coming from Tampa. He was a retired radio communication officer in the Merchant Marines, served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, and member of Brooksville Elks, American Legion Post, Century Wireless Club, Ham Operators, Brooksville for more than 50 years, and St. Anthony Catholic Church. CARMAN, Vernon Perley of New Port Richey, died Friday, March 20, 2009. The eldest son of William Perley Carman and Maude Leone Clemons, he was born Dec. 1, 1923 in the Town of Fowler, NY. He married Mary Alice Bannon on June 18, 1946 in Martinsburg, NY. A veteran of the Eastern Theatre Operation of WWII, Mr. Carman was the holder of six battle stars. He served in a searchlight division. Mr. Carman was a machinist with Continental Can of Chicago, IL. He retired in 1977 and subsequently moved to Florida. Mr. Carman raised mallard ducks for several years. He enjoyed traveling, investing, bird watching and his cats. He is survived by his sisters, Olive Backus of Watertown, NY and Evelyn Tiegen of Scio OR; and brother Lyndon Carman of Liverpool, NY. He was predeceased by sisters Inez Fisher of Phoenix, AZ in 2008 and Carol Ella Carman of The Town of Fowler, NY in 1940. Final resting place will be in Martinsburg with his beloved Mary. COMPTON, Edwin Francis 78, passed away March 19, 2009 at Woodside Hospice. Ed was preceded in death by his wife Betty and son Ed. He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter, Cathy; son, Andy; son-in-law, Marty; granddaughter, Katie; & grandsons, Trip & Tim. Ed grew up in Haddonfield, NJ and graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in engineering. He served as a 1st Lt. in the Army. He owned & operated Compton's Log Cabin in Haddon Township, NJ for more than 30 years. He sold the restaurant in 1995 and moved to Long Beach Island, NJ where he worked in real estate. His memberships included the Rotary Club of Beach Haven, NJ and Elks Lodge #2345, on Manahawkin, NJ. He had a great sense of humor, was a lifelong Phillies fan, loved fishing and his grandchildren. CONLEY, John H. 87, of St. Petersburg, passed away March 18, 2009, at St. Anthony's Hospital. Born in Reedy, WV, he was a proud veteran of WWII, engaging in active combat on European fronts. He earned BS & MS degrees from WVU and served as teacher and administrator in West Virginia schools for over 36 years, retiring in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Freda Dodge Conley; daughter, Dr. Joyce Conley; and son, John David Conley. CROW, Jean Wood of Gainesville, died Friday, March 20, at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. She was born in St. Petersburg, Nov. 2, 1920 to Dr. Alvin James Wood & Florence Emery Wood. She moved to Gainesville in 1942 after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Florida State College for Women, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Brent Crow, sister, Frances W. Shafer; and brother, Dr. Rowland E. Wood, both of St. Petersburg. DAVIS, James E. 79, of Clearwater, passed away on March 20, 2009, at home under the care of Hospice. Born in Winsted, CT on Sept. 9, 1929, to Olive (Clauss) and Thomas Justice Davis. He is survived by his wife, Marlene (John); 3 children Patricia Carrier (Rick) of Royalston, MA; Barbara Bremer (Bob) of Point Pleasant, NJ; and Frederick Miner (Heather) of Barkhamsted, CT; and 4 grandchildren Jessie and Eric Bremer and Ryan and Meredith Carrier; his brothers Thomas J. (Nancy) of Winsted, CT and Wesley A. Davis (Fran) of Pinegree Grove, IL and his sister, Linda Maley (Jack) of Clearwater; his uncle and aunt Theodore and Lorraine Davis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Davis graduated from The Gilbert School in 1947, attended Meteorology College in Oklahoma, and worked as a Weather Observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau in Washington, DC. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1954, after having served in Japan. Mr. Davis started at Northwest Bank (formerly Mechanics Savings Bank of Winsted) in March of 1954, becoming president and CEO in March of 1981. He was active in community services as Treasurer of the Red Cross for over 25 years; Treasurer of The Gilbert School for over 25 years, becoming a Trustee and currently a Trustee Emeritus; Treasurer of the Winsted Improvement Corp; and Chairman of the American Heart Association. Mr. Davis was a member of the Rotary Club of Winsted, CT, Greenwood Country Club in Winsted, CT and the Belleview Biltmore Golf Club in Belleair. She was a homemaker and attended Clearview United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. DOLL, Shirley V. 77, of Clearwater, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Mease Dunedin Hospital. She was born in the town of Horseshoe Bottom in Russell Springs, KY & came to Clearwater in 1977 from Baltimore, MD. Shirley & her late husband, Richard E., founded Doll Brothers Carpet Cleaners & Dyers. Shirley was an avid gardener. She always enjoyed going back home to KY to spend time with her family & to walk through their beautiful vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed reading novels. Mrs. Doll was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Richard E., & her parents, Ruel & Cassie Coe. Survivors include two sons, Joseph W., of Palm Harbor & Donald W., of Seminole; two brothers, Luther Coe, of Jamestown, KY & Richard Coe, of Russell Springs, KY; 4 grandchildren, Eric, Cody, Aaron & Sarah. EUSTACE, Lynn W. 52, of Tampa, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family on March 21, 2009. Lynn was a native of Jacksonville. She graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1975, and from Florida State University in 1979, where she earned a degree in psychology. She pursued a career in social work, serving the developmentally disabled and working for Children's Medical Services for the State of Florida. She was also a volunteer for the Tampa Aids Network for many years. Lynn was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church, where she displayed her love of books and reading by being involved in the Book Fair for many years. Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Patricia Wrigley. She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. (Bud) Eustace Jr.; her children, Matthew and Blair; her sisters, Patricia Foster and her husband Richard of Tallahassee, Marie Stevens and her husband, Bobby, of St. Augustine, and Lisa Zimmerman and her husband, Edward, of Jacksonville. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Rick Foster, Amy Foster, Ronnie Stevens, Kim Cunningham and her husband, John, and their son, Jake, and Ashley and Taylor Zimmerman. The family will receive visitors at Christ The King Church from 5-8 pm on Monday evening, March 23rd, with a rosary beginning at 7:30 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, March 24th. Burial will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. A reception will then be held at the Christ The King Parish Center. JOLLY, Ellen Irene Age 92, of New Port Richey, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009 at E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville. She was born Feb. 19, 1917 in Dayton, OH to Charles and Margaret Harpeng Popp. She moved to Gainesville in 1958 from Dayton, OH and worked in the Agriculture Department at the University of Florida. Irene and her husband Richard moved to St. Petersburg, in 1964 and lived there until moving to New Port Richey in 2005. Irene was a watercolorist and began writing poetry and her life story at the age of 65. Irene was a devoted Christian and her faith was an inspiration to her family and friends. She was a member of Church by the Sea in Madeira Beach. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, M. Richard Jolly. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Williams Read of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Annie Jolly of New Port Richey; sister-in-law, Mamie Popp of Dayton, OH; and 3 grandchildren, Richard & Richie Jolly of St. Petersburg, and Rick Williams of Gainesville; 3 great-grandchildren, Richard, Raymond & Katy. He was employed at Jabil for 15 years and was an experienced drummer. Rob was a member of the Men's Auxiliary of Post #10094 V.F.W. in Indian Rocks Beach and loved the beach, the Buccaneers, and his New Hampshire property. TRANSOU, M. Irene (Holliday) Passed away March 11, 2009. Born in Talhaquah, OK on May 5, 1917, Irene moved to Tampa in 2002 from Sarasota. She married Robert D. Holliday in 1946, and raised her two sons in Wichita, KS, & Albuqerque, NM, where she developed a love of the southwest. After Bob's untimely death, she later married Ross Transou, and enjoyed many years in Green Valley, AZ. After his death, she moved to Florida to be near her beloved grand-children. She enjoyed travel, painting, bridge and times shared with family. She is survived by her son and daughter -in-law, Ronald & Deborah Holliday; her stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Elizabeth & Frederick Solberg; her grandchildren Brian and Kathryn Holliday, their spouses Silvana and Bryan; her stepgrandson Wit Solberg, his wife Brandi; her great-grandson Oliver; and her step great-grand-children Audrey, Quynh and Truman; as well as nephews, nieces, and grandnephews and nieces. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Blount & Curry Carrollwood Chapel, 3207 West Bearss Ave., Tampa, at 2 pm.
