HILLSBOROUGH

WHAT ARE THE TERRIERS DOING?

Enjoying their depth. They're so loaded we didn't even mention standouts like speedy receiver Charles Lovett and Jamie Knott, the best fullback we saw in the preseason.

What they're saying about the Terriers

Coach Earl Garcia "Last year we missed the playoffs for the first time since '93, so we're not very happy about that."

Coach Earl Garcia "We're very talented. I'm not going to lie to you. We've probably got the best skilled players ... since my time here at Hillsborough.''

Jefferson coach Mike Fenton "I know they have had some acquisitions in the offseason, so I know they will be very good.''

Jefferson coach Mike Fenton "I think Hillsborough is the best team in Hillsborough County this season.''

DB/WR Terrence Mitchell "We got seven returning starters on offense. Then, RB Rodney (Johnson) was with us before ... and we're going to have a fast defense. Lot of speed.''

RB Rodney Johnson "Our defense is real athletic, lot of new bodies and a lot of speed. I think the defense is going to be ready. I think they're going to be real good.''

Friday Night Rewind Hillsborough missed the playoffs for just the second time since 1993 and will hop right back on the postseason train in 2009.

Additional characters

A few Terriers we'll be following on Fridays

DB/WR Terrence Mitchell Not sure what is more exciting - him catching the ball, or dislodging it from a receiver.

RB Rodney Johnson He says he wants to be the 1,500-yard back he has always thought he was. We think he's going to come pretty darned close.

QB Tarean Austin Throws a sweet ball, and if his marksmanship has improved, could have a monster season.

The Transfers Yeah, that's right. Andre Gunn (OL), Trey Gonzalez (OL), Dixon Phillips (TE) - worth all the hype? Our thumbs are on our BlackBerries, eyes on you!

Why the Terriers will make the playoffs

WillWinIf

They don't have a really, really, reeeeeeally bad night against East Bay or King. Otherwise, nothing is stopping the Terriers from the postseason.

Why the Terriers may not make the playoffs

WillLoseIf

The mix of transfers and returners end up imploding when they all realize that, hey, there's just one football to go around.
