Republicans in Bay County are not waiting for Rep. Ray Sansom to have his day in court. They want him to resign from the Legislature now.
The Republican executive committee there this week voted 16-7 in favor of a resolution urging the Destin Republican to step down, citing his dealings with a state college that have resulted in a grand jury indictment and investigations by the Florida House, a state ethics commission and the FBI.
A circuit judge in Tallahassee today could say whether Sansom's motion to dismiss the criminal case will be granted. He has been charged with felony official misconduct for securing $6 million in taxpayer money for an airport building that a political contributor planned to store corporate aircraft in, according to records and testimony.
John Salak, chairman of the Bay County group, said Sansom needs to resign: "He doesn't represent Republican values of honesty and integrity. Someone needs to speak up and they need to do so before someone finds him guilty. To do after the fact is just piling on."
