The hamstring injury that has hampered Gators freshman WR Andre Debose for the past several months will have to be surgically repaired and he will not play this season, coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday.
Debose is a star recruit from Sanford Seminole whom the Gators had high hopes would help fill the role of departed Percy Harvin.
"It looks like the decision's been made, he's going to have surgery," Meyer said. "They haven't given me a date yet. It's a tendon where the muscle is detached from the bone that they are going to attach. It's a significant time period. He won't play this season."
For the past week, Debose, his parents and team doctors and trainers have been studying his options and working with other doctors who are more familiar with the injury.
"He wanted to really play, but that's where he has the support of a great mom and dad," Meyer said. "Really, he's crushed. But he also understands that this is a marathon, not a sprint. So he's going to get fixed."
PATCHAN AT TIGHT END?: With lack of depth at tight end, former Armwood standout OL Matt Patchan could play there if UF had to do without Aaron Hernandez.
"He's a guy that can handle that role as well," offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said. "He's a very fast guy, so he's a guy we're going to turn to in that situation."
Meyer said TE Desmond Parks likely will redshirt.

USF: Safety out
TAMPA - Coach Jim Leavitt said sophomore SS Jerrell Young had a metal plate inserted in his broken right arm and won't play Saturday against Western Kentucky.
But Leavitt isn't ruling anything out after this week.
Coaches are considering starting options to replace Young. Redshirt freshman Jon Lejiste is a possibility.
ALVARADO GETS NO. 10: Senior P/K Delbert Alvarado will wear a No. 10 jersey on Saturday as a tribute to Keeley Dorsey, who collapsed and died during a team conditioning workout in January 2007. One player will wear Dorsey's No. 10 in each game.
