9-9-09 NOTES OF THE DAY

- Manager Joe Maddon ignored the numerology by not starting No. 9-wearing catcher Gregg Zaun on 9-9-09. "If I had thought of it far enough in advance possibly, but I guess I'm not that smart, either," Maddon said.

- Zaun was hoping the numbers would be in his favor. "I've been trying to tell people, but I guess they don't believe in numerology as I do," he said.

- The numbers game has been mixed for the Rays. They won on 9-9-99, 5-5-05 and 8-8-08. They lost on 6-6-06 - as the Devil Rays to, of course, the Angels - and 7-7-07.
