BACKUP BULLS QB AN ABLE WR

It took redshirt freshman QB Evan Landi just four plays to get involved Saturday in USF's 40-7 victory over Wofford.

Playing in his first game and lined up at wide receiver, Landi, who has worked his way into the rotation at receiver, caught a pass from QB Matt Grothe for a 10-yard gain.

"I wouldn't say it was a surprise, but (the catch) came a lot quicker than I thought it would," Landi said.

That would be Landi's only catch, as he worked in and out of four- and five-receiver sets. With senior Jessie Hester still limited with an ankle injury, Landi is getting his chance at significant playing time.

Offensive coordinator Mike Canales, who calls Landi "Slash," said he provides many options because he knows the offense as a quarterback.

"He knows every spot," he said. "He understands how our roster is supposed to be run. He understands what the quarterbacks are looking for. He understands the (defense's) coverage."

No update on defense: Defensive coordinator Joe Tresey said he's still unsure how the Bulls will line up without sophomore starting S Jerrell Young, who broke his arm against Wofford.

Tresey said everything depends on who will play nickel, and senior Jerome Murphy, redshirt freshman Jon Lejiste and sophomore Tyson Butler are all competing for that spot.

SAME CAPTAINS: Coach Jim Leavitt said Saturday's captains will be the same as last week: Grothe, George Selvie, Kion Wilson and Mo Plancher.

UF: No letting up

GAINESVILLE - Florida won its opener by 59 points, but coach Urban Meyer said he hasn't had any difficulty motivating the Gators for Week 2 opponent Troy, the preseason pick to win the Sun Belt.

The Trojans lost their opener 31-14 at Bowling Green.

"You're facing a better team. You're facing better personnel," Meyer said. "You're facing an offense that's very explosive and a real talented defense."

At LSU last season, the Trojans led 31-3 in the third quarter but lost 40-31.

Meyer has used that game as an example to his team all week.

"I think the best thing that happened to us is when they should've beat LSU and outplayed LSU last year," Meyer said. "Our guys are ready."

INJURY UPDATE: DT Lawrence Marsh (ankle) and LB Jelani Jenkins (ankle) are doubtful for Saturday. LB Brandon Hicks (dehydration) practiced fully Thursday, but Meyer said he "wasn't looking too great" afterward. Meyer expects Hicks to rest until game time.

LB Dustin Doe and expected starting CB Janoris Jenkins will be available after being suspended for the opener.
