St. Petersburg's Dondre Davis and Emmanuel Watkins were suspended two games by the Florida High School Athletic Association for their involvement in a scuffle with East Lake players during last week's football season opener, Green Devils coach Joe Fabrizio said.

Davis and Watkins were ejected in the third quarter, along with two players from East Lake. It was unclear which Eagles were ejected or if they were suspended. Calls to East Lake coach Bob Hudson were not returned.

The suspensions are a blow for St. Petersburg. Davis, who had seven interceptions last season, is one of the county's top returning defensive backs. Watkins was expected to be a big contributor at tight end. Their absence will be felt tonight against Lakewood, which has one of the county's most explosive offenses.

IRC volleyball gets back on feet

The Indian Rocks Christian volleyball team has been without a match this week as it prepares for this weekend's Orlando Volleyball Academy tournament at the Orlando Sports Center. The break in the schedule is probably a good thing.

Five players - Kindall Edwards, Natalie Feathers, Lauren Coxhead, Michelle Brown and Rachael Jones - have been unable to practice because of flu-like symptoms. Three (Edwards, Brown, Jones) are starters.

Another player on the shelf, junior setter Kahley Dohme, is close to 100 percent after hyperextending her elbow in the summer and should be ready to go today.

IRC is scheduled to play Fernandina Beach and Lakeland today and Orangewood Christian on Saturday in elite division pool play.

Northside Christian will also compete and plays in the premier division. The Mustangs get Lake Highland Prep and Boone today and finish pool play against Royal Palm Beach.

All first-place pool teams will play an elimination tournament for the gold championship on Saturday.

Spartans' Douse gets start

Lakewood's Jermiel Douse will play for the first time this season when he takes over at quarterback for the Spartans tonight vs. St. Petersburg.

Douse, who came over from Dixie Hollins, sat out against Gibbs because the administration wanted to make sure the FHSAA had all the paperwork regarding his transfer, Lakewood coach Cory Moore said.

Douse is starting in place of Alphonso Evans, who hurt his right shoulder against Gibbs.
