Tampa's Dwight Gooden, the former big-league pitcher, was introduced Thursday as the senior VP of the Newark Bears, a minor-league baseball team in the independent Atlantic League. Gooden, 44, was hired, according to the Newark Star-Ledger, to "improve their community outreach efforts." He and the team also are opening a baseball academy in Newark.

The ratings game
ESPN's telecast of Monday night's Miami-Florida State game was the network's second-most-viewed college football game ever. It had an average viewership of 5.8 million households and total viewership of 8.4 million people. That is second to the Labor Day 2006 game between the schools, which averaged 6.3 million households and had a total of 9.1 million viewers.
