A 27-year-old man without a valid driver's license was arrested Wednesday, accused of speeding and fleeing from police with his 2-year-old son in the car.
Roy James Jr. of 933 Wildwood Way is facing charges of reckless driving, fleeing and eluding, and habitual driving while license is suspended or revoked. He was being held in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $10,250 bail.
According to arrest reports, a Clearwater police officer attempted to stop James about 6 p.m. when the officer saw him pull onto S Fort Harrison Avenue in a reckless manner. The officer followed James as he cut in and out of traffic, doing an estimated 80 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone on Clearwater-Largo Road, the reports said.
The officer wasn't aware there was a child in the car until James pulled into an apartment complex where a relative lives at 1704 Clearwater-Largo Road. The child was in the front seat and was unrestrained, police said.
The report said James told the officer he was aware his license was suspended, but that he wanted to make sure he got the child to a relative before he was arrested.
James has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for possessing, selling and trafficking in cocaine, and battery on a law enforcement officer.
