ANNIVERSARIES

The McManuses

Pat and Jim McManus of St. Petersburg celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a brunch at the Don CeSar given by their children. Married Aug. 18, 1959, in Camden, N.J., the McManuses moved to St. Petersburg in 1995 after living in Germany for seven years and raising a family in Springfield, Pa. Mr. McManus is an Army veteran of the Korean War and went on to work for the Department of Defense in South Philadelphia as a computer programmer. Mrs. McManus was a homemaker and an executive secretary at Ralston Purina. The couple have six children and 13 grandchildren.

The Newberrys

Nell and Les Newberry of Pinellas Park recently celebrated 50 years of marriage with a family party in Sonoma, Calif. The Newberrys were married July 25, 1959, in Colquitt, Ga. Mr. Newberry was an Air Force pilot who served from 1958 to 1963 - he was at MacDill Air Force Base from 1960 to 1962 - and achieved the rank of captain. The couple moved to the area in 1963 from Plattsburgh, N.Y. He went on to have a 35-year career at Honeywell in Clearwater. Mrs. Newberry was a homemaker and a registered nurse. They have four children and five grandchildren.

The Sherers

Carl and Alfreda Sherer of Indian Shores recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends at the Frog Pond restaurant. The Sherers met in 1937 and married on Aug. 18, 1939, in Albany, N.Y. For the next 24 years they lived in Canton, Ohio, Buffalo, N.Y., New Orleans, and Charleston and Huntington, W.Va. In 1963 the Sherers moved to St. Petersburg and purchased Hughes Manufacturing, a metalmaking plant. In 1998 they sold the company and started Sherer Manufacturing Inc., where Mr. Sherer continues to serve as chief executive officer and Mrs. Sherer is secretary and treasurer. They have a daughter and two grandchildren.
