HERE'S TO CHARITY

Florida has had numerous economic challenges within the past decade: the fallout after the attacks of Sept. 11, the widespread damage from hurricanes in 2004 and 2005, and the recession of the past couple of years.

All of that volatility means that nonprofit organizations struggle, too. But there is good news to be had beyond the headlines: The Corporation for National and Community Service reports that more Americans volunteered in 2008 than in 2007, even though charitable giving declined for the first time in 20 years.

That Tampa Bay area residents show compassion for those in need is hardly a secret. This, the 13th annual Neighborhood Times Social Calendar, contains more than 100 events planned during the next nine months. Most of them benefit organizations that help our struggling neighbors, and secure the success of various cultural, educational and medical institutions.

The list rarely is complete; future columns will include additional happenings as we learn about them, and you can find still more at tampabay.com.

Mental health professionals tell us that helping others gives a boost to our self-esteem at every age. If the current economy has you feeling fearful and discouraged, you might sign up to help one of the groups mentioned in these pages. And if you can afford to, bolster that effort with a financial contribution. That way, everybody benefits.
