The zany bedroom farce, My Husband's Wild Desires Almost Drove Me Mad, was the big winner in the Richey Suncoast Theatre's audience-chosen awards, the Tommys, named for 1930s movie star Thomas Meighan, for whom the original movie house was named.
Wild Desires took six of the 13 awards, including the coveted Favorite Show of the 2008-09 Season. It featured the burly Jim Poe as Mr. Griffin, a cross-dressing husband who loves to watch his sugary-sweet wife, played by Linda Luckenbach, as she makes love to strangers. Poe won for Favorite Supporting Actor in a Comedy, and Ms. Luckenbach won for Favorite Lead Actress in a Comedy.
The two other winning Wild Desires actors were Bill Schommer, as the amorously unwilling handyman Connelly, for Lead Actor in a Comedy, and Stella Sylvester as Mrs. Griffin's randy sister Louise, for Favorite Supporting Actress in a Comedy.
Bob Reece won Favorite Director of a Comedy.
A close second in the Tommys race was the musical Hello, Dolly, which garnered five Tommys, including those for Favorite Actress and Actor to Anne Lakey as Dolly and Bob Marcela as the half-a-millionaire, Horace Vandergelder; and Favorite Supporting Actress and Actor in a Musical for Liz Onley-Waldorf as the flirtatious widow, Irene Molloy and Keith Surplus as the hapless store clerk Cornelius Hack. Dolly's fifth winner was Marie Skelton for Favorite Director of a Musical.
A third winning production was the musical Crazy for You, which picked up two Tommys, including Favorite Musical Director for Stella Gaukhshteyn, who was also musical director for Hello, Dolly, and Ms. Skelton as Favorite Choreographer.
Other shows in the season were the musical Sweet Charity and the Neil Simon comedy, Lost in Yonkers.
