BYU SHUFFLES OFFENSIVE LINE TO DEAL WITH LATEST INJURY

PROVO, Utah - No. 7 BYU has a few injuries to deal with this week before Florida State visits Saturday.

Offensive lineman Braden Hansen (left knee) is doubtful. The line was already banged up, so coach Bronco Mendenhall said nose tackle Jordan Richardson will move from defense to offense.

Defensive back Scott Johnson may have a concussion after taking a knee to the jaw Saturday at Tulane. He had a concussion during training camp, but Mendenhall said the injuries were different and Johnson might face FSU.

Vols stick with QB

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he will stick with redshirt senior Jonathan Crompton as his starting quarterback for Saturday's game at Florida.

Kiffin won't allow Crompton to speak to the media.

"He doesn't need any more distractions," Kiffin said.

Crompton threw three interceptions in a loss to UCLA on Saturday and was involved in a fumbled snap.

Kiffin said it wasn't all Crompton's fault. Kiffin cited poor play-calling by coaches and said the offensive line performed worse than any other group, with receivers a close second.

Kiffin said he is worried about Crompton's mental state because of negative things being said about him.

"I've talked to him," he said. "We're going to really focus on this game plan, focus on this week. Can't worry about the other stuff and what people are saying."

Connecticut: Starting quarterback Zach Frazer (right knee) is expected to miss the next two games, against Baylor and Rhode Island.

East Carolina: Leading rusher Dominique Lindsay (right shoulder) is doubtful for Saturday's game at UNC.

Kent State: Senior running back Eugene Jarvis will miss the rest of the season with a kidney injury. Jarvis has rushed for 3,426 career yards, 563 shy of the school record.

LSU: Running back Richard Murphy is expected to miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury. The junior hasn't been a starter but has played in every game in his career.

Mississippi: Coach Houston Nutt says defensive end Greg Hardy (sprained left ankle) is "very doubtful" for Saturday's game with Southeastern Louisiana, and it's unclear what Hardy's status is for a Sept. 24 game at South Carolina.

North texas: Coach Todd Dodge said his son and quarterback Riley Dodge (separated shoulder) will miss Saturday's game against Alabama. Nathan Tune will start.

Pittsburgh: Sophomore starting safety Andrew Taglianetti is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He might be able to get a medical redshirt.

USC: Coach Pete Carroll said quarterback Matt Barkley (bruised right shoulder) and safety Taylor Mays (mild right knee sprain) will practice this week. Carroll didn't say if he expects them to be ready for Saturday's Pac-10 opener at Washington.

vanderbilt: Starting safety Ryan Hamilton (torn pectoral muscle) and starting right tackle James Williams (dislocated left ankle) are out for the season.

Basketball

USF: Altron Jackson, who played for the Bulls in 1999-2002 and was Conference USA's career scoring leader until last season, has returned as a manager on Stan Heath's staff. Jackson, from Sarasota's Riverview High, had 2,017 points.
