Elton John may have had designs on adopting Ukrainian orphan Lev, but those hopes have been dashed. The nation's Family, Youth and Sports Minister Yuriy Pavlenko says no way because John and partner David Furnish are gay. Not only that, but Elton, at 62, is too old to adopt, Pavlenko told the Associated Press. Ukrainian law requires prospective parents to be legally married, and the country doesn't recognize John's civil partnership. And a parent can be no older than 45 years older than a prospective adoptee.

Whitney opens up
In an interview that aired Monday, Whitney Houston told Oprah Winfrey that her marriage to Bobby Brown was a big mistake, and that her mom had to intervene to save her life. "He was my drug; I didn't do anything without him," Whitney said of her ex-husband of 15 years, whom she divorced in 2007. She admitted snorting a lot of coke and smoking a lot of weed, which was obvious to anyone who had see the couple since, oh, 1998 or so. Thank goodness for mom Cissy Houston, who showed up one day with a court injunction and some cops to take her daughter to rehab. "She said, 'I'm not losing you to the world. I'm not losing you to Satan. ... I want my daughter back,'" Whitney told Oprah.
