The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is holding a "Name Our Rays'' contest. Three cownose stingrays - two males and one female - need names.
The winner will be the person who chooses all three names as selected by aquarium staff. The winner gets the choice of two prizes: a family of four membership to the aquarium with a Dolphin Encounter and four tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays game on Oct. 3, or a $200 certificate to the gift shop.

Columbus Day essay entries due Sept. 25
The Daughters of Italy Lodge 2825 invites students in grades 6 through 8 to enter its essay contest, "Why Should We Celebrate Columbus Day?"
Students are encouraged to be creative in their writing, but follow guidelines for correct grammar. The 500-750 word essay, typed or neatly and legibly written, must have a cover page with the student's full name and telephone number, school name and grade.
Entrants must be in good standing attending a Pinellas County middle school. They do not have to be of Italian ancestry. The winner will be notified by Oct. 6 and invited to attend the lodge's luncheon Oct. 10 at East Lake Woodlands Country Club. The winner also will read his or her essay and receive $50 and a certificate of excellence.
