At midday Tuesday, two children were found wandering on their own along Little Road near Emmons Avenue.
One was a 5-year-old girl in a nightgown and sneakers. The other was a 2-year-old boy in a pajama shirt and soiled diaper. He wore no pants or shoes and, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the boy was covered in dirt and food and had scrapes on his legs. The children otherwise appeared to be in good health, the sheriff's report said.
An hour later, the children's caregivers were found: Denay M. Goltry, 23, and Michael A. Lentricchia, 20, both of 8348 Blueberry Drive, No. 3, in New Port Richey. Goltry told authorities she had been sleeping when the children slipped away from the home.
Goltry was arrested on a charge of child neglect, and she remained at the Land O'Lakes jail Wednesday in lieu of $500 bail.
Lentricchia's arrest report saidhe was only in charge of the 2-year-old boy. Lentricchia was also arrested but was charged with child abuse. He also remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $500 bail.
This wasn't Lentricchia's first arrest. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, he pleaded no contest last year to possession of cocaine and paraphernalia and has faced other charges.
The relationship between the children and Goltry and Lentricchia was not released because of the nature of the allegations.
Kevin Doll, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, said in cases like this the children are either placed into foster care or into the custody of relatives.
