A 65-year-old Clearwater man was seriously injured Saturday after he fell off a boat that then ran over him off Treasure Island, deputies said.
Three people were aboard the 17-foot Proline boat, which was heading east on the north side of Eleanor Island near John's Pass, according to the Pinellas County sheriff. At about 1:30 p.m., the steering cable snapped and the pilot lost control, deputies said.
As the boat abruptly turned right, Thomas W. Demaree was flung into Boca Ciega Bay. The boat continued, then made a 360-degree turn before running over Demaree. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, deputies said.
Deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
The captain, Stephen P. Schneider, was not injured, nor was a second passenger.
