WACHOVIA FOUNDATION DONATES TO SERTOMA

Published Sept. 21, 2009|Updated Sept. 22, 2009

The Wachovia Foundation has been a partner with Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation since 2004 in the initiative to provide hearing screenings in Pasco County schools. All prekindergarten, kindergarten, first- and sixth-grade students need to be tested.

Sertoma provides this service with the dedication of more than 200 volunteers logging 751 hours of service to ensure the early detection of hearing loss. With early detection and intervention, it is possible to minimize the effects of hearing loss on language development, academic performance and cognitive development.

Last year, Sertoma performed 10,367 screenings on Pasco elementary and middle school students in 50 schools, identifying 469 students in need of further testing from a school audiologist. Sertoma relies on the continued support of organizations like Wachovia to continue this important project.
