CHIEFS' PARRISH HAS OFF DAY

Chamberlain cross country coach Bill Strack knows senior Mark Parrish won't make excuses for his disappointing effort at Friday's Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, so Strack will do it for him.

Widely considered the county's top runner, Parrish struggled to a 13th-place finish (16:42.67) in the 38-team event at the University of Florida Golf Course.

Berkeley Prep senior Tyler Greathouse (16:23.95) was the top local finisher, placing fifth.

"I just think everything kind of ganged up on him and he wasn't feeling his best," said Strack, whose team finished ninth, one place ahead of Berkeley.

"But one thing about Mark, Strack said, "When he has a bad race, watch out because he's going to bounce back real big."

That chance for redemption comes Friday evening at the Ryan McCall Invitational.

Bucs happy with tourney

Against some of the nation's toughest high school volleyball competition, Berkeley Prep finished fourth in the Archbishop Mitty Tournament this weekend in San Jose, Calif.

The Buccaneers finished the tournament 2-2, reaching the semifinals, but lost to No. 4-ranked Goleta (Calif.) Dos Pueblos in four games, 25-23, 25-15, 24-26, 25-19. Berkeley then dropped a five-set match to Santa Barbara (Calif.), 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12.

The tournament featured five of the top 15 ranked teams in the nation, Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said.

"That's the reason we went," Dagostino said. "We knew we were going to face some of the top competition in the country."

In the semifinal match, Jordan Burgess led Berkeley with 14 kills, while Lindsay Young added seven kills and three blocks.

Archbishop Mitty, ranked the No. 1 team in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com, ESPNRise and MaxPreps, won the tournament,.
