Anna Liisa Covell was recently initiated into Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society. She was recognized for her superior achievement as an undergraduate student at the University of South Florida.
The Phi Sigma Theta is dedicated to recognizing and rewarding academic achievements in undergraduates at institutions of higher learning.
Recreation and Sports
On Sept. 9, the West Hernando Athletic Club for Seniors kicked off the start of another season at Veterans Memorial Park in Spring Hill. The opening ceremony began with the American Legion Post 186 Color Guard. Al Vasone then sang the national anthem.
Serving as league commissioner this year is Joe Martinez. This year's president is Ron Quatkemeyer. The first ball was tossed out by member Joe D'Andlet.
The West Hernando Athletic Club for Seniors is a softball league for individuals age 55 and older who want to participate in organized sports in a friendly and competitive manner. The 60-game schedule runs from September through April. The playoffs are in May.
The 2009-10 teams includeAmerican Legion Post 186, C's Pub, Economy Insurance Mart, Elks Lodge 2582, Good Shepherd Medical Clinic and Suncoast Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center.
In addition to weekly games, the league has weekly and monthly social events and activities. Games are at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Veterans Memorial Park in Spring Hill. For information, visit the league's Web site at www.hometeamsonline.com/teams/whacs.

The Charlie Misiak Senior Softball League is a league for individuals age 60 and older. The 2009 summer teams - named after the managers - include Arch, Bob P., John, Krisa, Larry G. and Mitch.
The summer schedule is divided into three parts. All games are played at Anderson Snow Park in Spring Hill, and all teams play twice each week. Three games are played each Tuesday and Thursday.
Aug. 18: Mitch, 21, Larry, 5; Arch, 15, John/Bill, 8; Krisa, 8, Bob, 3.
Aug. 20: Krisa, 12, Mitch, 7; John/Bill, 13, Bob, 3; Larry, 13, Arch, 8.
Aug. 25: Bob, 13, Larry, 12; John/Bill and Krisa tied at 10 each; Arch, 19, Mitch, 7.
Aug. 27: Mitch, 15, John/Bill, 11; Arch, 10, Bob, 5; Larry, 16, Krisa, 10.
Sept. 1: Krisa, 10, Arch, 9; Larry, 5, John/Bill, 2; Bob, 13, Mitch, 6.
Sept. 3: Krisa, 12, Bob, 9; Larry, 10, Mitch, 4; Arch, 19, John/Bill, 8.
