SCOUTING REPORT: FONTANA

Sitting on the pole bodes well for Denny Hamlin, who has won twice, finished third once and been in the top 15 in all but one of his six previous starts from the front of the grid. Jimmie Johnson has won three times including his debut in 2002 at his home track (he's a native of El Cajon, about 120 miles south of Fontana) and has an average finish of 6.2, the best in the series. Another Chase driver to watch, and one who could use a boost, is 10th-place Carl Edwards, who has nine top-10 finishes in 10 races at Auto Club Speedway. This isn't a great track for points leader Mark Martin, who has four top-five runs in 16 races here.
