Paul the Octopus, who was born in England and now lives at the Sea Life Aquarium in the German city of Oberhausen, picked Germany to defeat England in Sunday's round of 16. On Friday Paul chose a mussel out of a glass marked with the German flag over a mussel in a glass with the English St. George's Cross. Aquarium spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said that during the 2008 European Championship, Paul had an 80 percent success rate picking Germany's games.

A decade ago, African teams employed traditional healers to cast spells on balls, smear goalposts with potions or infect changing rooms with magic powders. The healers are still relevant for Ghana - some say midfielder Michael Essien is sidelined by an injury because of a spell cast by his father, as revenge for being neglected.
