Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John R. Allen on Wednesday assumed the post of acting commander of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base with the unanimous Senate confirmation of Gen. David Petraeus as the new top commander in Afghanistan.
Petraeus had to step down as CentCom head to assume the new post after the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal last week in a flap over a Rolling Stone article.
Allen has been Centcom's deputy commander since July 2008. A permanent chief to replace Petraeus has not yet been nominated by President Barack Obama. That selection requires Senate confirmation.
Allen is a 34-year Marine Corps veteran who is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.
