Promoter Sean Wood says he wants to build the brand of Ultimate First Friday by bringing celebrities to his monthly events. Last month, it was actor Boris Kodjoe (Madea's Family Reunion) drawing 500 partiers. This Friday at 9 p.m. at the Hyatt in downtown Tampa, it will be actor and model Columbus Short (Stomp the Yard).

Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Wood has marketed the young professionals events to both the Orlando and Tampa Bay markets and says this area needs more events with star power.

He's right....

If Gen. David Petraeus can stabilize the Afghanistan war, he may be the top GOP presidential candidate - for 2016. And if he wins, we'll have our first president from Tampa. We're claiming him as ours....

Comedian Sheryl Underwood said if J.R. Ewing or Blake Carrington were in charge, the leaking oil well would be capped by now. You know she's right.

B.J. Upton is the Rays' most valuable player. Don't get me wrong; he's not producing the most valuable performance. But he possesses all the potential to be an MVP.

We may never see him reach that potential (in a Rays uniform) and may never understand why he didn't maximize his ability, but the team would rocket from third to first if he did....

I got a little excited Wednesday when new Lightning GM and NHL great Steve Yzerman asked to be my friend on Facebook.

Alas, it's a fake, according to Lightning officials. Apparently, people like to create such celebrity pages just to dupe people. They almost got me. Sigh.
